Oshkosh Celebration of Lights
Quietly nestled along the shores of Lake Winnebago, in beautiful Menominee Park in Oshkosh, lies a single mile stretch that transforms into illuminated holiday wonder each year since 2001. Now marking its twelfth year, Oshkosh Celebration of Lights is no longer a local best-kept secret.
This extraordinary event now attracts well over 10,000 vehicles annually, all filled with family and friends who find themselves mesmerized by the wonder of nearly a million twinkling lights. From the 100-foot tree and sculptured scenes to the animated light displays; the twinkling beauty and holiday music allows visitors to escape to that magical place only the spirit of the holiday season can bring.
Fun Family Events
Amazingly, Celebration of Lights is able to coax Santa out of his North Pole Workshop to visit with the children. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, Santa will be waiting for you at his Oshkosh Workshop to hear what special gift or toy the children are dreaming of for Christmas. Be sure to bring your camera to get a picture of the kids on Santa’s lap.
Feed the live reindeer near Santa’s Workshop, visit the Elves Hideout for special children’s holiday story times every Friday evening, or make a fun holiday project. You can even visit Santa’s Snack Shop for hot cocoa or other treats.
The Night of the Torches is Saturday, December 7, when hundreds of torches and roman candles against a winter night sky add dazzle to the Celebration of Lights. Come and enjoy this breathtaking sight.
Race for the Light
Saturday, December 7 is the 11th Annual Race for the Light 5K Run/Walk to benefit Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services. This is one of the domestic abuse shelters’ largest fundraising events and provides a fun and healthy way to raise awareness and money to help end domestic violence in our communities. Over 1000 runners take part in this event each year. It's also a great way to kick off the holiday season—the racecourse winds through the breathtaking display that is Celebration of Lights in Menominee Park.
FREE Community Nights
Several area businesses generously sponsor weekly Community Nights at Celebration of Lights, allowing everyone to enter at no charge. This year, Community Nights will be held on the following Tuesdays: November 26, December 3, December 10, and December 17. Sponsors for the 2013 Community Nights include: Provident Financial, Community First Credit Union, Fox Communities Credit Union, and Winnebago Community Credit Union. Of course, Santa will be on hand for the kids on each of the Community Nights.
From the very beginning, Oshkosh Celebration of Lights has made its mission to give back to the Oshkosh community in several ways. In addition to financially supporting park improvements, the event conducts a Food Drive of non-perishable food that is donated to the local food pantry. Nearly 7 TONS of food is collected annually with a total of well over 80 tons donated since the event began. Visitors to Celebration of Lights get $2.00 off their admission when they bring a food donation, so remember to check your kitchen cupboards before you come!
Additionally, Celebration of Lights has teamed up with Winnebago Home Builders Association each year to sponsor the Toys for Tots Program. Visitors are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys to be distributed as Christmas gifts and messages of hope to less fortunate children in the Oshkosh area. Please remember to bring a toy that will put a sparkle in a child’s eye this Christmas.
We haven’t forgotten our furry friends either. Lakeside Animal Hospital is this year’s sponsor for Oshkosh Area Humane Society Night on Saturday, December 14. Receive a $2.00 discount on your admission when you bring items to help the Humane Society in their work finding homes for animals. Some suggestions are: dry cat or dog food, bleach, kitty litter, paper towels, pet treats and pet
Cost: $8.00 per carload, $7.00 with donation of non-perishable food.
